SOMFS Staff Retreat 2011

This year the staff at Spokane Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery held our 12th annual staff retreat downtown at the Spokane Club. Along with our staff were the doctors and staff from Ellingsen-Paxton-Johnson Orthodontics, Dr. Erin Johnson and Dr. Kathy Luchini, Dr. Brandy Richey and Dr’s Lisa and Michelle Ellingsen of Ellingsen Endodontics. We are pleased to announce that it was one of our best Staff Retreats in some time.  We would like to give a big thank you to our speaker, Bruce Christopher for his highly motivating and entertaining sessions. We have used Bruce Christopher several times over the years for staff training on communication and team work and he always does an excellent job.  Check out his CD’/DVD’s @ bcseminars.com.  The staff along with a few of our referring offices thoroughly enjoyed the topics of conversation and videos. We would also like to thank the Spokane Club for the wonderful staff and food. The staff retreats that Spokane OMS puts together is a time where ourselves and other offices can get together outside of a typical working office day, and brain storm how to make the upcoming year better all around.
Our Speaker: Bruce Christopher
Staff from: SOMFS

While breaking out for individual office sessions. Spokane OMS was given an inspirational talk on a father son team, Dick and Rick Hoyt. Rick Hoyt was born in 1962, however was diagnosed as a spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, due to lack of oxygen to his brain during birth. Rick would never live a “normal” life. Rick however overcame many obstacles and in 1975 entered public school for the 1st time at the age of 13. Two years later Rick heard of a 5 mile benefit run to help a young lacrosse player that had been paralyzed in an accident. Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair, Rick later told his dad “When I’m running I feel like I’m not handicapped.” To this day Dick and Rick have completed in over 1,000 races, marathons, duathlons, and triathlons. 6 of which have been ironman’s. Dick hopes that he will still be able to push Rick when he is 70 in the Boston Marathon, Rick’s favorite race. Dick turns 70 in 2011, and neither father or son are ready to quit running.

This story touch so many of the staff at Spokane OMS, it shows dedication, drive, and the willingness to help another person.

Please visit: www.teamhoyt.com for more information, or if you would like to make a donation or even run with the Hoyts in their next upcoming race. See website for event calendar.

We look forward to new endeavors both within our staff here at Spokane OMS, and our referring offices.

Sincerely,

Mark C. Paxton

Save A Life-Give Blood

On July 13th Spokane Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery sponsored their 1st annual blood drive in partnership with Inland Northwest Blood Center. Ten employees from Spokane Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Travis Coulter and EPJ Orthodontics gave blood for a good cause. We would like to thank everyone who took time to volunteer and look forward to participating with INBC next year for another successful blood drive.

Interesting facts about blood:
  • 4.5 million Americans will need a blood transfusion every year
  • Someone needs blood every two seconds
  • Healthy adults who are at least 17 years old, and at least 110 pounds may donate blood
  • The human body has enough blood vessels to encircle the earth more than twice
If you are interested in donating blood contact INBC in the Spokane area at
(509) 624-0151 or (800) 423-0151.
or by visiting their website at  http://www.inbc2.org
